Sporting Spring

Year to year, and the older I’ve (Gerry) become, springtime couldn’t arrive any sooner. From the moment we ring in the New Year, I’m absolutely over the cold and ready for some warm weather. January and February are rough, but when Valentine’s Day arrives, I feel we are headed for the final stretch. There’s a light at the end of winter’s long, arduous tunnel.

Several years back, I adapted the TV meteorologist term of meteorological spring. That being, spring starts on March 1st and goes until the last day of May. Summer being June, July, August, and so forth. Therefore, today, I sit writing with 8 days until the first day of MY spring. Pitchers and catchers have reported to spring training in Florida and Arizona, and we are getting an idea on how the college hoops post season tourneys are shaping up.

Ready to celebrate spring!

Baseball and college basketball tourneys are synonymous with this time of year, and every bit as important as the warmer temperatures. I do know when pitchers and catchers report to spring training, and when the first spring training game will be played. They start today with a full slate of games. I haven’t watched nearly as much college basketball in recent years as I did growing up. Although, in the last week or so, I’ve suddenly started paying attention as we get to the final stretch of games. We know the ACC tourney is just around the corner and if you grew up in North Carolina, this is a big deal. More so now, is that it signifies the start of spring for me. The next week is the NCAA tourney, which usually has games on St. Patrick’s Day. All this bundled with some warmer weather, brings hope and joy to my heart.

With warmer weather just around the corner, and exciting sports to watch, this time of year could not have arrived any sooner.
