Wondering how you can help to reduce food waste? Well, if you are someone who has a lot of leftovers that go bad, this is for you.
With gardening around the corner, we begin thinking about our plans for growing our own food. We make sure that our items won’t be in abundance unless we have a plan for them so they don’t go to waste.
In this episode, we discuss the top ways of how to reduce food waste. These nuggets have worked for us, and continue to help us not have to throw items out that went bad or that we did not use.
How to Reduce Food Waste- Discussion Topics
- Meal plan for the week. Know what you are going to be eating for each meal.
- When shopping, stick to your list and use the items you have. When you buy things you don’t need, you usually overconsume, and it also allows more room for waste because you eat things that are not planned while other things go bad.
- Learn how to store your food. Use air-tight containers. Bread items last longer in the fridge. Carrots last longer in some water in the fridge, etc.
- Pantry/fridge challenge- go through your pantry and your refrigerator and put together meals with what you have.
- Compost- peels, egg shells, coffee grounds- they can all be composted and then turn into lovely nourishment for your plants and/or garden.
- Eat out less or take out less. If you are like us, we love both: dining out and taking out. Just be sure to store the leftovers you bring home correctly, then eat them!
- Avoid throwing items away- there are lots of things that are multi-use. You can make dog treats with apples or bananas. Bread can be made into bread crumbs to use later. Always look for other options before food goes bad.
