If you are looking for a reason to visit North Carolina, NC Minor League Baseball may be the best one! Actually, that makes up a few reasons due to the collection of minor league teams in every region of the state.
The Impact of NC Baseball Teams
I’m currently reading Welcome to the Circus of Baseball by Ryan McGee, an account of McGee’s experience as a young intern for the Asheville Tourists baseball team in the early 1990s. This got me thinking more about the impact minor league ball has had in the state of North Carolina.
Growing up in Central North Carolina a huge pastime for me (Gerry) involved minor league baseball. Most notably, the Durham Bulls and Carolina Mudcats. The Bulls in particular were my favorite. They gained huge popularity after the release of the movie, Bull Durham, Starring Kevin Costner in 1988.

The games were full of excitement, from the crazy antics of the mascot Wool E. Bull to the frenzied fan base often derived from the local universities. Across town was the more laidback and family-friendly experience of the Carolina Mudcats. Fun fact: this was Shannon’s first job, as a Lady Mudcat.
The ball field in Zebulon, NC, Five County Stadium, was often referred to as the “Field of Dreams”. This was taken from the famous movie of the same name, also starring Kevin Costner.
NC Minor League Baseball Teams (MiLB)
For those of you who are unaware, Major League Baseball has a minor League system, broken down into three tiers: Tripe-A, Double-A, and Single-A. Each major league team has an array of affiliate minor league teams dispersed through the three-tier system.
These teams are essentially feeding talent to the major league ball clubs.

Let’s walk you through the current lineup of minor league teams (affiliated with major league teams).
Triple-A Teams
- Durham Bulls
- The Charlotte Knights
Single-A Teams
- Asheville Tourists
- Hickory Crawdads
- Winston-Salem Dash
- Down East Wood Ducks
- Fayetteville Woodpeckers
- Carolina Mudcats
- Kannapolis Cannon Ballers
- Greensboro Grasshoppers

There are no Double-A teams in North Carolina.
The teams are scattered across the state through major cities and some in smaller towns such as Hickory and Kannapolis.
There is a deep-rooted history with teams such as the Asheville Tourists and the Durham Bulls. Asheville, for example, plays at McCormick Field which opened in 1924. It is currently celebrating its Centennial year (2024).
The Asheville Tourists have had several major league affiliations going back to the 1934 Boston Red Sox.
Minor League Teams in NC Unaffiliated with MLB
You should know, that North Carolina also has minor league baseball teams and leagues that are organized but do not feed talent to the major league clubs.
Some of those leagues, just to name a few, are the Atlantic League, Coastal Plain League, and the Appalachian League.

Some of the teams that fall into this category that we enjoy watching are the Gastonia Honey Hunters, the Burlington Sock Puppets, and the High Point Rockers.
Entertainment Provided by NC Minor League Baseball
All history aside, minor league baseball provides one of the best forms of entertainment one can have on a summer’s night. Promotional nights have been a huge part of the game for a long period. From bobbleheads, t-shirts, etc. these items are always great collectors’ items for baseball fans.
Most teams feature a colorful cartoon-like mascot entertaining the fans between most innings of the game.
Many ballparks have iniquities about them that we love. For example, the Atrium Health Ballpark, home of the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers has a walking track. On non-gamedays, it is open as a public park.

The First National Bank Field, home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers, has two canine mascots: Willie Mae Mays, and Little Jackie Robinson. The dogs have jobs if you can believe that! Jobs include greeting visitors, retrieving bats, and bringing balls to the umpires!
Food at the Ballpark
Last, but not least, ballpark food. Mmmmm! I think you know what I’m talking about!
When I say ballpark food, that certainly includes beer! It is a staple for many over the age of 21. Just remember to always drink responsibly.

Today’s ballparks offer a wide array of craft beers, suited for the more distinguished palate. This is a far cry from the Schlitz Malt Liquor Bull my buddies and I committed to at the original Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The best pairing with any ballpark beer is the classic hot dog with mustard or condiment of your choosing. If you are not a meat eater, like myself, there is a wide array of options available at the modern ballpark.
When considering the classics, hot dogs, pizza, peanuts, and popcorn are still the go-to for adults and kids alike.
Even older kids, like myself, are eager to recapture the childlike fun of an evening at the ballfield.

“Take me out to the ballgame, take me out to the crowd, buy me some popcorn and crackerjack, I don’t care if I never get back!”
