Our Stay at The Sunset Inn
The Sunset Inn sits along the marsh with views that stretch for miles. We stayed in The Hatteras Room, where mornings started with coffee on the screened-in porch, and the soundtrack was nothing more than the hum of the marsh and the call of birds. Sure, that sounds cheesy, but it’s true!
There’s a swing out there that easily becomes your favorite seat in the world.
Breakfast at the Inn is thoughtful but straightforward: fresh fruit, granola, breads, yogurt, and plenty of coffee. You can enjoy it in the main house or take it back to your room, which we did every morning.
There’s something about sipping coffee in your robe while watching the sunlight move across the marsh that makes you want never to recheck your phone.
The Sunset Inn is a grown-up getaway. It’s ideal for couples, writers, or anyone who wants quiet time without feeling lonely.

Things to Do in Sunset Beach NC for Couples
There’s no rush to do anything at Sunset Beach, which is precisely the point. Our days were slow and full in the best possible way.
Our morning routine included enjoying strolls and lounging on the beach, of course. The beach itself is wide and uncrowded, perfect for long walks that stretch into conversation or comfortable silence.
Evenings often led us to Sunset Beach Pier, where the view lives up to the town’s name. Watching the sun melt into the horizon never gets old, and it’s one of those experiences that makes you stop talking altogether to take it in.
If you love nature, keep an eye out for local wildlife. The marsh views from the Inn are full of movement, with herons, egrets, and other coastal birds often gliding by.
The Wind Phone at Sunset Beach
In a quiet corner of Sunset Beach, near the pier, sits something small but meaningful- a wooden phone booth known as The Wind Phone.
We came upon it while walking.
It offers no dial tone or connection, yet for many who visit, it provides one of the deepest connections imaginable.
The Wind Phone is a disconnected telephone placed in a peaceful outdoor setting where people can speak to loved ones who have passed away. The idea began in Japan when a man named Itaru Sasaki placed a phone in his garden to cope with his grief.
After the 2011 tsunami, others began visiting to express their own feelings, and the Wind Phone became a symbol of comfort and remembrance.
Over time, more have appeared around the world, each offering a quiet place to process loss and share words never spoken aloud.
The Wind Phone at Sunset Beach was created in loving memory of Tyler James Blumenfeld, who died suddenly at age 29 on September 20, 2021. Sunset Beach was the last beach Tyler visited, and he loved it.
The phone stands as a heartfelt tribute, inviting anyone who visits to pause, reflect, and speak freely to those they miss.
Our own grief journey has been a significant part of our lives, so we sincerely appreciate spaces like this.
The Wind Phone offers a quiet moment to connect, to remember, and to let emotion exist without needing to explain it.
It is simple, beautiful, and quietly powerful, a reminder that connection is not always defined by sound or distance.
Where to Eat Near Sunset Beach NC
One of the best parts of our stay was that everything felt local, fresh, and unpretentious.
We had dinner at Oak and Palm, a new restaurant just across the waterway from The Sunset Inn. The vibe was laid-back coastal. We dined on the balcony overlooking the waterway.
Our dinner was outstanding, but what was worth writing home about were the hushpuppies with the cinnamon butter. OMG! The best!
The owners also run several other restaurants in the area, and this one quickly became a favorite for its relaxed atmosphere and modern coastal menu.
Another night, we went to Le Volte in Ocean Isle Beach. It’s more of a fine dining experience, a perfect spot for a date night. The ambiance, the ocean views, and of course, the food were “chef’s kiss” perfect!
After dinner, we stopped by their donut and gelato shop, Spilt Milk, on the mainland for a sweet ending to the evening.
When we arrived, the Inn had arranged for a beautiful Host and Graze charcuterie box to be waiting in our fridge.
It was the perfect pairing with a glass of wine on the porch while watching the sun fade over the marsh.
And if you’re in the mood for something casual, Mootown Ice Cream on the mainland is a fun stop. It’s family-run, low-key, and has that small-town charm that makes every scoop taste better.
A Quick Detour to Calabash, NC
Just a short drive from Sunset Beach, you’ll find Calabash, a small fishing town often called the Seafood Capital of the World. While fried seafood isn’t really our thing, it’s a haven for those who love it.
Restaurants like The Boundary House and Oyster Rock are local favorites, and it’s easy to see why.
Waterfront views, friendly faces, and that old coastal energy that hasn’t been polished out.
Even if you’re not there for the food, the drive itself is worth it. The route winds past scenic marshlands, and if you look closely, you might spot alligators or roseate spoonbills along the way.
It’s one of those drives where you roll the windows down and remember how simple moments can be the most memorable. There is nothing in the world like smelling salt air with a fresh coastal breeze!
