We recently spent a few days tucked into the treetops at The Hemlocks at Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC), and it was precisely the kind of reset we needed.

Between rafting the Nantahala River, hiking a stretch of the Appalachian Trail, and sipping coffee while the rain rolled across the mountains, this trip delivered a perfect mix of calm and adventure.
Whether you’re into ziplining, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, or just want a peaceful escape in the woods, this little pocket of western North Carolina has it all—and you don’t even have to leave campus to experience it.

Rafting the Nantahala River: What It’s Really Like
The Nantahala River is one of the most popular whitewater rivers in the U.S., and after rafting it twice in two different ways, we totally get why. Our first experience was in a ducky (an inflatable kayak), and it rained a lot during that first adventure.
We learned that the area is actually a rainforest, so the rain is like any other day.

But honestly, once you’re already soaked and laughing, it just adds to the fun. You shouldn’t let a little rain prevent your Nantahala River rafting trip. As long as it is safe, NOC will move forward so you can have a great time!
The next day, we went on a fully guided Nantahala rafting trip, and it was the perfect balance of thrilling and doable.
The NOC guides were incredible, making it feel safe, smooth, and exciting without ever tipping into overwhelming.

It was one of those experiences that pulls you right into the present moment, which for us, is always the goal when we get outdoors.
This is a great place to start if you’re new to rafting. And if you’ve been down rivers before? You’ll still appreciate the flow, the scenery, and the chance to ride solo in a ducky or work as a team in a guided raft.
Staying at The Hemlocks: Luxury in the Treetops
Our basecamp for the trip was The Hemlocks at Nantahala Outdoor Center, NOC’s brand-new bungalow-style lodging nestled in the hills above the river. When we say “treetop retreat,” we mean it.
The bungalow was peaceful, private, and surprisingly upscale, with a complete kitchenette, comfy king bed, stylish furnishings, and the kind of porch that makes you want to sit with your coffee and stare into the forest for hours.

Oh, and an amazing amenity? A washer and dryer came in handy so we could wash our river clothes and re-wear them the next day!
One night, it stormed, and we opened the doors to listen to the rain and feel the cool mountain air breeze through. With views of the mountains, treetops, and the overall lush green scenery, it felt like a mountain sanctuary.
If you’re looking for that mix of nature and comfort, The Hemlocks at Nantahala Outdoor Center nails it!
More Outdoor Adventures at NOC
While we didn’t end up ziplining due to lightning in the area (NOC takes safety VERY seriously, thankfully!) or mountain biking (our legs were still recovering from hiking), both activities are offered right on-site.

NOC’s Mountaintop Zipline Tour gives you sweeping views of the Nantahala Gorge, and their guided mountain biking experiences are great for both beginners and more experienced riders.
We talked to some mountain biking enthusiasts on the first day and were amped for the experience. This is just a reminder that when your body tells you no, honor it.
While we regret not having experienced biking on the NOC trails, we loved having more time at The Hemlocks at Nantahala Outdoor Center!

Speaking of Hiking: The Appalachian Trail
We did manage to sneak in a hike on a slight stretch of the Appalachian Trail, and even walking it for a short time felt iconic.
In case you aren’t familiar with the deets, the Appalachian Trail runs from Georgia to Maine, over 2,000 miles, so stepping on it, even briefly, is a reminder of how epic and rooted in adventure this area really is. Iconic, really.
We loved hearing the sounds of the river water rapids nearby as we maneuvered along the trail. It’s one of those aspects of nature that feels like a gift. It made us extremely grateful for the moment.

On-Campus Dining + Convenience
One of the things we appreciated most? We never had to leave.
With two on-campus restaurants (River’s End and Big Wesser), a general store, and an outfitters shop, everything we needed was just steps away.
We ate well, drank better, and didn’t have to hop in the car once. The River’s End overlooks the river with cozy views, while Big Wesser is more open-air and casual, great for grabbing a drink post-raft.

Also, if you’re on the NOC campus and don’t stop at Slow Joe’s Doughnut Bus, we’re not sure we can be friends. It’s a big blue bus that feels straight out of a Jim Morrison lyric, “the blue bus is calling us,” serving up hot, made-to-order doughnuts that were so good… we ordered six.
Yep, six. No regrets, and don’t even judge. You would do the same.

They also have coffee, so it’s the perfect spot to start your day or grab a little sugar boost between adventures.
More Than a Stay—The Hemlocks Made It Personal
We happened to arrive on Gerry’s birthday, and The Hemlocks made it feel extra special. The staff took the time to recognize Gerry’s birthday, and those small touches made the trip feel more like a celebration than just a getaway.

It’s not just a great place to relax—it’s also the perfect spot to mark something meaningful, whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or just a “we made it through a wild season” kind of moment.

FAQs | Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely. You can book a stay at The Hemlocks and just enjoy the peaceful mountain setting, eat at the on-site restaurants, grab a doughnut at Slow Joe’s, and soak in the views—no rafting required, but you should consider it because it is amazing!
Avoid cotton, wear quick-drying clothes or synthetics, and bring shoes that stay on your feet (no flip-flops). NOC also has a gear shop on campus if you need anything last-minute, and they also offer you a wetsuit for extra coverage. You can also check out our river attire and essentials.
Yes! The Hemlocks allow up to two dogs per cabin, and we loved seeing how dog-friendly the whole NOC campus is. We didn’t bring Rue and Bea this time, but we definitely will next time. Just note—pups can’t go rafting or ride the shuttles, but there are plenty of trails and river spots for them to enjoy.
