When most people think about the Smoky Mountains, they picture Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. We’ve spent time in both, but lately we’ve found ourselves drawn to places that move at a different pace.
That’s one reason we keep returning to Bryson City.
We first visited Bryson City for outdoor adventures like whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River and exploring the surrounding mountains.
This time, however, we wanted something different. We were looking for a long weekend where we could slow down, enjoy good food, spend time outdoors, and experience a side of Bryson City we hadn’t explored before.

Planning the Perfect Bryson City Couples Getaway
What we found was the perfect mix of mountain views, small-town charm, local experiences, and plenty of opportunities to simply enjoy being together.
If you’re planning a Bryson City couples getaway, here’s exactly how we spent our long weekend.
Where We Stayed: The Fryemont Inn
Our home base for the weekend was the historic Fryemont Inn.
Perched on a hillside overlooking Bryson City, the inn feels like stepping back in time. The property has welcomed guests since the 1920s, and much of its character remains intact today.
One of our favorite parts of staying here was the porch from our balcony suite.
Each morning started with coffee in the rocking chairs while looking out over downtown Bryson City and the surrounding mountains. There was no rush to get moving. We simply sat, talked, and soaked in the view.

The Fryemont Inn is also a great location for exploring the area, since many of Bryson City’s attractions are only a short drive or hike away.
After checking in, we settled into vacation mode with an Aperol Spritz before dinner and spent the evening enjoying the slower pace that makes Bryson City so appealing.
Day One: A Special Dinner at Fryemont Inn
One of the highlights of our stay was attending an Italian wine pairing dinner at the Fryemont Inn. This is not something that happens on the regular, though the restaurant does serve dinner. Check with them to see when their next wine pairing dinner is, if you are interested in this sort of thing.
The evening combined multiple courses with carefully selected wines, creating an experience that felt both relaxed and special.
As vegetarians, we’re always appreciative when restaurants thoughtfully accommodate dietary preferences, and we enjoyed the opportunity to try dishes we might not normally order.
Bonus, with my tree nut allergy, the Fryemont Inn made extra special accommodations for me with my meals. It made me feel like I was taken care of by family.
The intimate atmosphere made it feel more like an event than simply going out to dinner.

It’s the kind of experience that works perfectly for a couple’s getaway and sets the tone for the rest of our weekend.
Day Two: Elk Viewing in Cherokee
The next morning started with something we’ve wanted to do for years.
We drove over to nearby Cherokee in hopes of spotting elk.
Not long after arriving, we saw one! She was grazing by the road and seemed to enjoy being filmed from a safe distance, of course.
Something is surprising about seeing such a large animal casually walking when you’re used to spotting deer back home. Even though we’d seen photos before, it was still exciting to watch one moving through its natural habitat.

If you’re visiting Bryson City, it’s worth setting aside time for an elk-viewing excursion. Cherokee is only a short drive away, and seeing elk in the Smoky Mountains is one of those experiences that sticks with you long after the trip ends.
A Stop at Darnell Farms
From Cherokee, we headed to Darnell Farms. Monica, the owner of The Frymont Inn, told us that a visit to Bryson City simply wasn’t a visit if you didn’t include Darnell Farms. Boy, was she right!
We didn’t know exactly what to expect, but it ended up being one of our favorite stops of the weekend.
Darnell Farms is a working farm that welcomes visitors throughout the year with seasonal activities and events.
We picked fresh strawberries, spent time meeting the farm animals, and may have enjoyed the swings more than most adults probably should.

We interacted with goats and a fun and friendly donkey!
The farm offered a nice reminder that not every vacation memory comes from a major attraction. Sometimes the simple moments become the ones you remember most.
By the time we left, we had strawberries in hand and plenty of photos to prove we’d fully embraced our farm day.

Exploring Downtown Bryson City
No visit to Bryson City is complete without spending time downtown.
One thing we appreciate about Bryson City is that it still feels like a real mountain town. The downtown area is walkable without feeling crowded, and there are enough shops, restaurants, and local businesses to keep you entertained for an afternoon.
We spent time wandering through town, popping into shops, and simply enjoying the atmosphere.
For travelers who prefer slower travel experiences, Bryson City strikes a nice balance. There’s enough to do without feeling overwhelmed by crowds or constant activity.

Beer at Mountain Layers Brewing Company
Later that day, we headed to Mountain Layers Brewing Company.
The rooftop area quickly became our favorite part of the brewery.
With mountain views stretching into the distance and a laid-back atmosphere, it felt like the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring.
Even if craft beer isn’t your thing, the setting alone makes it worth a visit.
We found ourselves lingering longer than planned, enjoying the scenery and talking about everything we’d done so far on the trip.
Day Three: Waterfalls and the Great Smoky Mountains
One reason we love Western North Carolina is how easy it is to get outside.

During our stay, we spent part of a day exploring some of the area’s waterfalls at the Deep Creek Trailhead.
The Smokies have no shortage of hiking opportunities, and even shorter waterfall hikes can reward you with incredible scenery.
For us, hiking isn’t always about where you end or where you are trying to get to. Sometimes it’s simply about spending a few hours away from screens, surrounded by trees, moving at a slower pace.
Bryson City makes that easy.

Riding the Great Smoky Mountain Music Train
One of the most unique experiences of the trip was riding the inaugural Great Smoky Mountain Music Train.
Unlike a traditional train excursion, this experience combined live music with the scenic beauty of western North Carolina.

As the train traveled through the mountains, we moved between cars listening to different musicians perform. We rode from Bryson City to Nantahala Outdoor Center for a short intermission, then back to Bryson City
One of our favorite parts was being introduced to artists we had never heard of before. By the end of the ride, we had several new names added to our playlists.
The views were beautiful, the atmosphere was fun, and the experience felt unlike anything else we’ve done in the area.

Unwinding at Lakeview at Fontana
Before wrapping up our getaway, we made time for one final experience.
Lakeview at Fontana is known for its mountain views and unique outdoor soaking experiences, so we couldn’t resist spending part of an afternoon there.

We had a treetop soaking experience which you wouldn’t even believe! It is literally soaking in a huge soaking tub within the treetops overlooking Fontana Lake and the mountains surrounding it.
It is totally private, so you can get out of your clothes in the bathtub, enjoy some champs, and just spend a few hours in nature.
After several busy days exploring the area, it was exactly what we needed.
The combination of quiet surroundings, fresh mountain air, and time to simply relax felt like the perfect way to end our trip.

Why Bryson City Works So Well for Couples
What we love most about Bryson City is its balance.
There are plenty of things to do in Bryson City! You can spend the morning watching elk, the afternoon picking strawberries, the evening enjoying a wine pairing dinner, and the next day riding a train through the mountains.
There are outdoor adventures for active travelers and plenty of opportunities to slow down when that’s what you need.

For couples looking for a mountain getaway that feels relaxed, authentic, and easy to navigate, Bryson City checks a lot of boxes.
We’ve visited more than once, and each trip has looked completely different.
That’s probably the best compliment we can give it.
No matter how many times we visit, Bryson City keeps giving us reasons to come back, and we can hardly wait to return!
