How to Make the Most Out of Exploring the Hawaiian Islands

Hawaii is a popular travel destination. It has many beaches, waterfalls, and mountains that attract many travelers. Moreover, the state is composed of 8 major islands, each unique in its own way. Some of the best Hawaiian islands for first-timers include Kauai—the oldest island with a rich history—and Maui, the second-largest island with many snorkeling and surfing opportunities.

Exploring the Hawaiian Islands

Because Hawaii’s islands have lots to offer, you will want to make the most of your trip for the best experience. This will leave you with no regrets and a better appreciation for the Aloha State. With that said, here are some ways you can fully enjoy exploring the Hawaiian islands:

Book inter-island flights in advance

Since Hawaii consists of many islands, you shouldn’t stick to exploring just one. Make it a point to visit 2—or even all the islands—to fully experience Hawaiian culture.

Inter-island flying is the cheapest and fastest way to hop from one island to the next. Moreover, Hawaii’s inter-island flights often go on sale, with tickets priced at $39 last year for Southwest Airlines. By booking ahead of time, you set an itinerary that will encourage you to explore an island as much as possible before your flight to the next one. This is also more convenient than booking on the spot since it’ll take time off your adventure. Besides Southwest Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Mokulele Airlines offer inter-island flights all year round.

Stay for a few days per island

As mentioned above, Hawaii provides travelers with many unique experiences other than just visiting beaches. You can visit volcanic sites, go to national parks, eat at local restaurants, and more. With all the places and activities you’d want to do, you won’t be able to enjoy exploring an island for 1-2 days only.

As such, it’s best to stay for 5-7 days per island, so you’ll have all the time to do everything you want. This will also make your trip feel less rushed, allowing you to take in the beautiful surroundings and new experiences that the state has to offer.

Rent a car to explore

Bouncing off the previous point, you’ll want to have a convenient way to get from one place to the next as you try different activities or see various attractions.

If you rent a car, you will be able to make the most out of exploring the islands and traveling around the local towns. In fact, Hawaiian island car rentals are available on the major islands, letting you conveniently visit the destinations you want. The providers you can choose from include Alamo, Payless, and Thrifty, offering various cars—including SUVs for groups and smaller cars for couples.

Also, you can get rental car insurance, as our article “Is Nomad Insurance Really Necessary as a Traveler?” emphasizes how it’s important to prepare for unexpected events—like car accidents—than shoulder the costs afterward.

Live like a local

Though many of Hawaii’s establishments and attractions cater to tourists, it’s best to enjoy what the islands offer like a local. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying activities made for tourists, such as going on bus tours; you may appreciate the islands better when you experience them like a local.

You can visit towns’ tourist information centers to get a local guide or ask for recommendations on where to eat or what to do in the area. This will give you a glimpse of what residents do in Hawaii, making you feel like a local, even just for a few days.

Making the most out of exploring the Hawaiian islands leaves you with no regrets after your trip. Make sure to follow our tips to get the best out of your upcoming trip to the Aloha State!
