Free Things to Do in Savannah That Are Actually Fun!
If you have ever seen the film or read the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, you have an idea of how the Savannah historic district can be alluring and intriguing. The best part is that it truly is like that in real life.
Savannah is a very walkable city, though there are some hills that can be somewhat trying when you’ve had a big meal and are going to or from the riverside district, but every huff and puff is worth it.
We are going to share the top free things to do in Savannah, and will been throw in a few cheap things at the end.
Cruise on Savannah Belles Ferry
Experience Savannah’s downtown from a different angle by hopping onto the Savannah Belles Ferry. This free entry system takes you across the picturesque Savannah River.
You can board it at Hutchinson Island and go to the other side, River Street, or vice versa. It’s a completely free ferry, running from 7.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m., giving you the chance to capture breathtaking views of the city’s historic downtown skyline and charming waterfront.
Take A Self-Guided Walking Tour
Self-guided walking tours fall on the list of free things to do in Savannah, regardless of whether you’re on a budget or not.
Self-guided, instead of group guided tours are a better idea because you get to linger longer on your favorite spots, change routes if preferred, and stop for a short coffee/snack break on the way.
Downtown Savannah is somewhat small, so you can easily take absolutely breathtaking walking tours from one activity to another.
Relax in Forsyth Park
This majestic 30-acre park has it all. The city’s most famous fountain at the park’s Northern edge inspires selfies, proposals, weddings, and so much more.
Often, the walk to the fountain is lined with local artisans showcasing their trumpet skills. On quieter days, you’ll find readers nestled deep in their hammocks, locals out with their pets, and art students sketching their surroundings.
Remember to stop by the Collins Quarter at Forsyth. It’s an Australian-inspired cafe open from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. and serves everything from refreshing drinks to brunch meals. We highly recommend ponying up to the bar and having a cocktail while you wait for a table outside.
Savannah Botanical Gardens
A tranquil sanctuary perfect for gardening lovers, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking a lovely spot to escape the city’s hustle.
The site also showcases historic structures, like the mesmerizing 19th-century farmhouse turned museum. Overall, it’s the perfect spot to relax, learn, and enjoy nature’s beauty without spending a single penny. It’s one of the best free things to do in Savannah!
Enjoy the 24 City Squares
In the original plans for the city of Savannah (designed by General James Oglethorpe) were 24 city squares. Of these 24, 22 remain that are loved by locals and tourists alike.
Walking these squares is one of our favorite (and most recommended) free things to do in Savannah.
While multiple streets touch the park’s perimeters, the most aesthetic and popular route is to walk Johnson Square south down Bull Street up to Forsyth Park.
Don’t miss Chippewa Square, where Forrest Gump sat on a bench for the film. You, too, can sit there though it looks a little different than the film, but fun, nonetheless.
Know before you go: The bench from Forrest Gump now lives in the Savannah History Museum. Entry into the museum is not free, but one of the budget savvy things you can do.
Watch Cargo Ships at The Savannah River
This is an unexpected attraction. The gigantic ships pass by on their way to the port by the Savannah River. It’s hard to explain, but it’s mesmerizing to watch. Though they pass by quickly, they make a great picture or video.
Trust us, this is well worth the time spent by the river.
Visiting a cemetery may seem odd, but they are the most peaceful (for obvious reasons) places you can visit, especially when they have a ton of history in them.
According to the Bonaventure Historical Society, this cemetery is one of the world’s most beautiful. We tend to agree.
While free, it is about a 3-mile drive or uber ride to it, so plan accordingly.
Know before you go: Many “Midnight” fans think that Jim Williams is buried here but he is not. He is buried in his hometown of Gordon, Georgia.
Stroll the Plant Riverside District
You may not think that visiting a power plant would be interesting, but hear us out. Thr 1912 plant has been restored and not only provides electricity for the downtown Savannah area, but electricity in the restaurants and nightlife within it.
There is always something going on in this area, so you can stroll around or make a plan to stop for lunch or dinner.
Be One With Nature
This is easy to do in Savannah. Being outside in this city is where you want to be. If you want to take it a step further, you should try out some of the nature trails. The Fort McAllister State Park Trails are our favorite.
You’ll see some of the most beautiful mossy live oak trees that you have ever seen.
We’ve heard great things about Skidaway Island State Park and cannot wait to hike the trails there, too.
Get Artsy at the City Market
We LOVE this area of Savannah! It seems like every time we go, there is some kind of sidewalk arts festival going on, and often, live music is being performed.
Just 4 blocks away is Paula Deen’s restaurant, The Lady and Sons. We highly recommend you get the buffet, then plan to do almost nothing the rest of the day. Seriously.
Some Budget-Friendly Options in Savannah
If you have a bit of money to splurge, we recommend a few budget-friendly options:
- The First African Baptist Church- It is the oldest black church in North America. You can take a history tour for around $7. Totally worth it!
- Savannah Bananas Baseball Game- If baseball is in season, you should do this. It’s the perfect mix of entertainment and baseball.
- Mercer Williams House Museum- This is for the “Midnight” fans. We had to visit the home from the book, and where Jim Williams killed Danny Hansford. Admission runs around $15, but again, well worth it for fans of the movie or book, or anyone who loves visiting beautiful historic homes

Savannah is just such a beautiful southern city, steeping in so much history. It has a romantic, slow pace to it that just cannot be replicated anywhere else.
