To begin with, why should you invest time in establishing a morning routine? Well, a regular morning ritual can help you:

We have always said that creating systems like a daily morning routine checklist is a great way to save your brain space for things that need more brain power. 

Similar to business, automating as much as possible for tasks allows your brain power to be better suited for analytical processing. We use a morning routine checklist to follow each day. 

We will share with you the steps we include in our own checklist so you can create your perfect morning routine.

These checklist ideas are just to get you thinking and creating your own. Once you identify your goals, you can create your personalized morning routine checklist to have a most productive day!

Rise and Shine

Select a wake-up time that aligns with your lifestyle and adhere to it consistently. It doesn’t have to be at 5:00 am if that doesn’t suit you. The key is maintaining regularity. 

Waking up consistently each morning can help regulate your body’s clock and make it easier to start your day.

The last thing we want you to do is to get up early feeling like you need to take advantage of the extra time to get more work done. A productive morning is one where you take care of yourself. 

If you are a night owl or have shift work that curates a different schedule, adjust your morning to when your day begins, not what others say is the right time to start. 

Limit Technology

We have a rule that we do not use our phones or any technology until we have grounded ourselves with nature and some exercise.

It is probably the most overlooked as far as wellness goes, but it should be a non-negotiable for your morning routine checklist.

Just this morning, we talked about how it’s nice to choose when you begin consuming technology rather than feeling a pull through the temptation to doom scroll in the morning.

Challenge yourself not to look at your phone for at least 30 minutes after waking. Then, acclimate yourself to ramping up to an hour or even two.

Start with Hydration

After a night of rest, your body craves hydration. When you wake up, have a glass of water to jumpstart your metabolism and detoxify. Consider adding a slice of lemon to set an even more positive tone. The citrus smell and taste will help give you a ray of sunshine with consumption. 

Stretch or Move

You don’t necessarily need to go to the gym. In fact, give yourself the morning in nature.

A brief 10-minute stretching routine or yoga session can work wonders. It’s even more beneficial when you do it outside.  If you have time, a brisk walk or short jog can elevate your mood and boost your energy levels.

The aim is to get your blood flowing and muscles active. One of the things we like to do is to make sure we are near the ocean in the mornings. Walking along the dock, smelling the salt air, and seeing the dolphins and/or horses on Carrot Island in Beaufort will start our day on the right foot.

Mindfulness and Meditation

Every morning routine checklist needs to include having quiet time with your own thoughts.

Spending a few minutes practicing a mindfulness meditation can help you start your day well. Whether you engage in breathing exercises using a meditation app or simply reflect quietly, taking time to ground yourself can enhance clarity and reduce stress levels.

We use the 5 4 3 2 1 grounding exercise in the morning. It is often referred to as the “anxiety attack 5 things” exercise, but it works really well as a meditation.

Investing time in development is valuable. This could involve reading a book, tuning into a podcast, or acquiring knowledge. Even dedicating 10-15 minutes can lead to progress over time.

Gratitude Practice

Enjoy a Nutritious Breakfast or Smoothie

Let’s preface this with the fact that I (shannon) do not eat breakfast. It was a decision I made when I began my wellness journey with intermittent fasting.

However, since your morning truly sets the tone for the day, I do make sure that I have a protein shake mid-morning. In addition to Gerry’s skincare routine, his healthy habits include having protein and fruit alongside his coffee.  

Opt for something that will keep you fueled until lunchtime. Oatmeal smoothies, eggs, or yogurt with fruit, is a healthy breakfast. Steer clear of cereals that offer a high but result in an energy crash later on.

Organize Your Day

Take a few moments to outline your important tasks and objectives for the day. 

Keeping things simple is key – jotting down a quick to-do list or some notes in your calendar can help you keep on track and organized. It’s important to prioritize your tasks, so you know what requires your attention.

Tips for Sustaining Your Routine

Start by avoiding trying to revolutionize your entire morning routine all at once. Introduce one habit at a time, and gradually expand your routine.

Stay flexible with your morning routine. Life is unpredictable. It’s okay to skip a day or two – don’t be too hard on yourself. Adjust as necessary. Get back on course.

Find joy in your routine. Practice positive affirmations, letting yourself know how proud and grateful you are for your body each day. Your routine should bring you pleasure. Include activities that bring you happiness and positivity. Hopefully, you wrap up your morning with a smile on your face.
