These routes are perfect for discovering the area’s rich past while soaking in the picturesque landscape. Not to mention, you will see so many apple trees along your drive!
If you are flying, you will want to fly into the Asheville Regional Airport. It is then about a 15-20 minute drive to Hendersonville.

Whether hiking the property’s trails, relaxing in the cozy interiors, or spending time at the animal barn interacting with horses, sheep, chickens, and goats, Horse Shoe Farm offers the ultimate escape.
We stayed in one of the Stable Spa lofts. It provided a quiet, relaxing ambiance that cannot be matched anywhere we have visited. There are cozy nooks for reading and working if you need to stay connected. Plenty of areas to simply unplug exist because we all need that.
Bonus: No kids are allowed in the Stable Lofts- this is a big win for DINKS like us.
Our favorite Horse Shoe Farm moment? Taking a meditative walk on the labyrinth at sunset—it’s an experience that nourishes the soul.
Another favorite was climbing to the top of the silo on the farm. Really! You can climb the stairs to the top of the silo, where there are the best views of the farm, alongside the coziest space to unwind, practice mindfulness, or journal.
You can even write a message on the wall, documenting your visit to the top.

Cheers Trail: Sip and Savor the Views
Hendersonville’s Cheers Trail is perfect for wine and craft beer enthusiasts.
You may not have considered North Carolina having wonderful wine, but we do! Read more about the Best Wineries in North Carolina.
We started at Point Lookout Vineyards, where the wine tastings were made even better by the jaw-dropping mountain views.
We spent some time with founder/owner Michael Jackson. Yes, that is his real name! He filled us in on the history of the land home to PointeLookout Vineyards. He said that his family ran an apple orchard for years but decided to use the enriched land as an opportunity to harvest grapes for wine.
Jackson shared that the mountain’s unique terrain is ideal for growing grapes. “The slope of the land ensures proper drainage, preventing the vines from becoming oversaturated, which is key to producing exceptional wine,” Jackson told us. He must be right because the tastings we were offered were delicious.
Before leaving, we purchased a bottle of their Rainy Day Red Wine and the Cabernet Sauvignon, both enjoyed during our tasting with sommelier Phyllis, who was so hospitable and educated us on the wine in the most enjoyable way!
Next, we headed to Marked Tree Vineyard, where the cozy atmosphere and equally stunning views created another memorable experience.
We were greeted by the expertise of sommelier Eric, who guided us through a tasting of their multi-award-winning wines. As we savored each sip, we enjoyed a beautifully curated charcuterie board, perfectly complementing the flavors.
One standout was the Ghost House Red, a wine we couldn’t resist bringing home. The story behind the name is as intriguing as the wine itself—it’s inspired by the former homestead on the Marked Tree Estate, where only the chimney remains.
Remarkably, the roofline is still visible on the chimney, giving the house a “ghostly” presence. As legend has it, the original owner was a wine enthusiast, making this bottle even more special.
Hendersonville’s unique combination of wine country charm and outdoor exploration ensures every visitor finds something to love.
Elijah Mountain Gem Mine
For a unique adventure, visit Elijah Mountain Gem Mine, where you can sift for gems and crystals. We scooped up a few crystal bracelets that we adore!
The Elijah Mountain Gem Mine has been rated one of TripAdvisor’s top things to do. And while you’re there, don’t forget to stop by and say hello to their friendly goats! For $3, you can purchase a bag of food to hand-feed them while interacting with them.
Trust us on this: the goats will brighten your day! You simply cannot spend time with them and not smile!
Flat Rock: A Quaint Village Town
Just a short drive away is Flat Rock, a quaint little village with so much to offer. We loved exploring the local shops filled with unique gifts and treasures.
While walking around Flat Rock with a coffee in hand from Flat Rock Bakery, we met a handful of people eager to tell us about their town, the area, and some of the things we could not miss!
Of course, we are sharing them with you!
Flat Rock Bakery has a great selection of baked goods from their brick oven, ice cream, and specialty snacks, making it the perfect place to refuel while exploring the area.
It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to take home something special or just grab a tasty treat!
Flat Rock Playhouse is a must-see while you’re here. As the official State Theatre of North Carolina since 1961, it delivers top-quality productions of musicals, comedies, and dramas. It’s a slice of history and entertainment you don’t want to miss!
Don’t miss The Wrinkled Egg —a fun spot for unique gifts. The shop is full of quirky American folk art, unique home décor, and one-of-a-kind items.
Another meaningful stop was the Blue Ridge Humane Society Thrift Store. Supporting homeless pets while finding some great treasures? Count us in! We scored a chic winter coat for me and a hat for Gerry.
Dupont State Forest
Just a short drive from Hendersonville, DuPont State Forest is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts. Known for its stunning waterfalls, hiking trails, and natural beauty, it’s the perfect spot for adventure and connecting with nature.
We heard about this park from a Flat Rock local who told us we must visit while in the area. Being the water and nature lovers we are, we are so glad we did!
Due to the ongoing recovery from Hurricane Helene, only some hiking trails have been reopened. It is best to check the Dupont State Recreational Forest website for up-to-date trail openings.
Where to Eat: From Farm-to-Table to Sweet Treats

- Breakfast: Start your morning at The Silo Cookhouse for a delicious farm-to-table breakfast. Bonus: breakfast is complimentary if you stay at the Horse Shoe Farm property.
- Lunch: Grab a bite at Dandelion Café. This eatery is part of the SafeLight program and allows victims of violence to learn skills and gain financial stability while working at the cafe. Don’t miss the grilled pimento cheese sandwich. HenDough, known for its amazing doughnuts and lunch options, is also a must! The creme brulee doughnuts are the best kind of sinful!
- Dinner: Wrap up your day at The Silo Cookhouse, where Chef Kyle and Chef Dan create unforgettable dishes using fresh, local ingredients. You will love anything on the seasonal menu, but start with the Japanese Milk Bread. Oh, em gee!!! Mouthwatering! If you want a laid-back option, try Uncle Scott’s Pizza. We grabbed a pizza to head back to our loft at The Horse Shoe Farm to watch the sunset and enjoy our wine, low-key style!
And don’t forget to end an evening with s’mores at The Horse Shoe Farm firepit—a cozy, nostalgic experience that perfectly ties the day together. When you stay on the property, you receive a complimentary s’mores kit with everything you need! Just show up to the firepit after sunset.

If you’re spending time in Hendersonville and want to add a slower, more nature-focused vibe to your getaway, Emerald Lake Retreat is just about 30 minutes away, and it’s absolutely worth the detour.
Located in Cedar Mountain, right near DuPont State Forest, Emerald Lake is a 41-acre private lakefront property designed for unplugging without giving up comfort.
Whether you’ve spent your day hiking waterfalls, fishing at the trout pond, or mountain biking the nearby trails, this is the kind of place that makes you exhale.
Emerald Lake Accommodations
The property offers several stay options, like a roomy lodge, a charming cottage, and two one-bedroom cabins (The Laurel Cabin and The Rainbow Trout Cabin).
Each space has its own charm, and all come equipped with kitchens, fireplaces, and relaxing spots to soak in the view, like porches, terraces, or screened-in spaces.
Emerald Lake is an excellent spot for couples, small groups, or even a wellness retreat, thanks to the layout: two full homes, two private cabins, shared gathering areas, and plenty of space to spread out.

You can hike private trails right on the property, hang out by the fire pit or pavilion, paddle around the lake, or simply do nothing (and feel great about it).
You can enjoy swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and even catch-and-release fishing in the lake or trout pond.
The onsite trails are scenic and peaceful, and if you’re into morning movement, the lakeside lawn is the ideal spot for yoga, meditation, or just standing there with your coffee pretending to be one of those people. We get that.
What We Loved Most About Emerald Lake
What did we love most? The balance. It feels private and tucked away (without actually being totally remote), and the layout makes it easy to hang out as a group or retreat solo with a book and some quiet.
We practiced yoga overlooking the lake, meditated under the trees (and in our room), and took naps on the screened-in porch.
There’s cell service and WiFi if you need it, but honestly? We barely touched our phones.
The quiet, the trees, and the water have that calming effect that doesn’t need marketing copy to sell you on it.
Even better, you’re less than a mile from DuPont’s Fawn Lake access point, so when adventure calls, you can be on the trail in minutes.
